AFTERGLOW erzählt den inneren Monolog zum Ende einer Beziehung, von Entfremdung und der Frage, ob man nicht mehr hätte tun können. Der Song kontrastiert seinen melancholischen Text mit unbeschwerten, weitläufigen Klanglandschaften für eine Geschichte vom Loslassen und Weitermachen, von der Feststellung, dass man selber manchmal nicht die richtige Person in einer Beziehung ist und sich auch fragen kann, ob man lieber mit sich oder mit seinen Schuldgefühlen leben möchte.
AFTERGLOW ist ein filigraner Indie-Pop-Song mit kristallinen Gitarren und einem Stimmenpanorama in Stereo. Julian Rybarski verbindet Leichtigkeit und warme Folksounds mit zeitgeistigem Songwriting. Das Arrangement der Bläsersektion kommentiert die Geschichte des Songs, bevor sich der letzte Refrain zu einer großen Bekräftigung aufschwingt.
Das Video zu AFTERGLOW wurde nach einer Idee von Julian Rybarski vom Contemporary Visual Artist Johannes Schebler und seinem Team umgesetzt, wie auch bereits das Video zur Vorgängersingle JOLLY GOOD. Eine rau skizzierte Optik trifft auf die Versatzstücke des Songs und formt einen Kurzfilm mit einer ganz eigenen Ästhetik, die bei nichts Bestehendem andocken muss, um genau so eingängig zu sein wie der Song selbst.

AFTERGLOW narrates the inner monologue towards the end of a relationship, towards estrangement, and it asks what one could have done at all. The song contrasts its melancholy lyrics with an encouraging, sweeping sonic landscape for a story about letting go and going on, about the declaration that sometimes, you yourself are not the right person in a relationship, and that wondering whether one rather wants to live with oneself or with one’s feelings of guilt seems okay, too.
AFTERGLOW is a delicate indie pop song with crystalline guitars, voices stacked in stereophonic panorama, entering the listener’s ears and heart immediately. Julian and his band combine airiness and warm, folky sounds with a contemporaneous approach to songwriting, while a sarcastic yet sympathetic horn section chimes in throughout the bridge, before the last refrain climbs higher to even greater affirmation, in one last jubilant key change.
The AFTERGLOW video was again brought to life by contemporary visual artist Johannes Schebler and his team, like its predecessor for JOLLY GOOD. A roughly sketched look encounters items from or inspired by the song’s lyrics, narrating a short film with a wholly idiosyncratic appearance that has no need to refer to preexisting works to be as catchy as the song itself.
