SomoS Art Space is pleased to announce the opening of “Schattenland,” the first solo exhibition outside her native Portugal by the emerging painter and occasional printmaker Teresa Supico. The exhibition will feature her latest series of paintings conceived and executed during her artist residency in Berlin.
Teresa Supico’s work, informed by Carl Jung’s concept of the shadow—the unconscious aspects of the self often relegated to obscurity—brings to light the complex interplay between the visible and the hidden, the conscious and the repressed. Berlin, with its cultural permissiveness and stark contrast to Supico’s more conservative Portuguese upbringing, serves as an ideal backdrop for this exploration. The city’s unique atmosphere, where shadows of all kinds find expression, has deeply influenced the works presented in “Schattenland.”
In the exhibition, Supico invites viewers into a dreamlike universe where abstract backgrounds reveal hidden figures, blending playfulness with profound exploration—much like the way Hayao Miyazaki, whose films she adores, subtly weaves serious themes through whimsical characters. Supico paints on fuzzy, synthetic felt instead of canvas, using her beloved monotype technique – stamping sponge and foam cutouts covered in acrylic.
“Schattenland” will showcase these experimental paintings alongside Supico’s drawings and larger works on unconventional materials such as carpet. The exhibition promises to be a captivating exploration of the subconscious, brought to life through Supico’s unique artistic language.
The opening reception for “Schattenland” will take place on August 23, 2024, from 6 to 9 p.m. at SomoS Art Space. We invite you to join us in experiencing Teresa Supico’s captivating journey into the shadows.
